Will Tesla's Single-pedal Mode be Banned? Ministry of Industry and Information Trends

TapTechNews June 3rd, recently, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology publicly solicited opinions on a mandatory national standard, Technical Requirements and Test Methods for Passenger Car Braking Systems, which involves changes to the application conditions of the energy recovery braking function of new energy vehicles. In response, there are voices in the market suggesting that Tesla's single-pedal mode may be banned.

According to Shell Finance and Economics, in response to the recent rumor in the market that Tesla's single-pedal mode may be banned, Tesla responded that this standard has not been officially released and implemented yet and does not affect the existing products and functions.

TapTechNews found from the Technical Requirements and Test Methods for Passenger Car Braking Systems (draft for comments) that the following clause is added to the additional requirements for vehicles equipped with an electric regenerative braking system:

For vehicles of Type A and those with both Type A and Type B electric regenerative braking systems, the braking effect achieved by releasing the accelerator pedal in the forward gear cannot slow the vehicle to a stop.

The document stated that in recent years, with the gradual widespread application of Type A electric regenerative braking system technology, as drivers have long controlled the accelerator pedal to achieve braking and stopping, it may lead to the formation of corresponding driving habits, and there may be cases of misoperation such as misstepping in emergency braking conditions. In order to clarify the positioning of Type A electric regenerative as an auxiliary braking, this requirement is put forward on the basis of sufficient industry research and discussion, aiming to guide drivers to develop good driving habits and ensure driving safety. And considering the current situation of industry technology and products, a separate transition period is given for this clause.

The braking effect achieved by releasing the accelerator pedal to slow the vehicle to a stop mentioned in the document is also the previously controversial single-pedal mode. When the driver does not step on the accelerator pedal, the vehicle will gradually slow down until it stops, and there is even no need to step on the brake pedal.

In May 2023, Tesla announced the recall of over 1.1 million vehicles in China, adjusting the factory default state of the vehicle energy recovery braking strategy and providing an option for drivers to choose the energy recovery braking intensity on vehicles without the option to select the energy recovery braking intensity.
