Omdia divides the overall MiniLED TV into two sub-categories, that is, QLED TV equipped with MiniLED backlight (TapTechNews note: that is, QD MiniLED TV) and MiniLED backlight TV, among which the latter will begin actual mass production and shipment this year.

Since 2022, thanks to the effective management of the MiniLED backlight supply chain and the progress of quantum dot material technology, the cost of QD MiniLED TV has continued to decline, and the market share of MiniLED TV has increased accordingly, which has had a significant impact on the leading position of OLED in the high-end TV market.

David Hsieh, senior research director of Omdia's display business, said:

OLED TV panels have significant advantages such as higher brightness in the high-end TV market. With fewer components and materials required, it has good environmental protection characteristics. At the same time, because there is no MiniLED group in the dimming area, there is no halo effect, and it also leaves a strong impression of picture quality among consumers.

However, MiniLED backlight is now competitive in several aspects: a mature supply chain, the trend of transitioning to larger LCD TV panels, cost-effective 500 to 2000 dimming areas, the capacity of having super-large sizes of 85 inches and above, and the sufficient supply of LCD TV OpenCell panels.

Therefore, the competition between MiniLED backlight LCD TVs and OLED TVs will become more intense, which will help expand the high-end TV segment market, while also keeping up with the trend of size increase.
