TikTok to Permanently Withdraw TikTok Lite Rewards Program in EU

TapTechNews August 5th, the European Commission announced today that TikTok has promised to permanently withdraw the TikTok Lite rewards program from the EU market to address the issues raised in the formal lawsuit filed by the Commission on April 22nd and to ensure compliance with the Digital Services Act (DSA).

TikTok has promised to permanently withdraw the TikTok Lite rewards program from the EU and will not launch any other programs to circumvent the withdrawal. The Commission said that any future violation of this commitment would immediately constitute a violation of the DSA and could lead to fines.

TapTechNews note: TikTok Lite is prepared for users with less than 2GB of memory, limited data connections, or only supporting 2G/3G network connections. It has a built-in tasks and rewards program, and users can earn in-app currency by completing specified tasks on this platform.

The EU previously said that France and Spain launched the above mechanism without prior serious assessment of the risks it brings, especially those related to the addictive effects of the platform, and without taking effective risk mitigation measures. The EU is particularly concerned about the lack of an effective age verification mechanism on this platform and is currently conducting an investigation.

The EU pointed out at that time that TikTok must submit a risk assessment report to the European Commission by local time April 23rd and provide the required other information by May 3rd. If TikTok fails to respond to the Commission's information request through a decision within the specified time limit, the Commission can impose a fine of up to 1% of its annual gross revenue or global turnover, and a periodic fine of up to 5% of its daily average revenue or global annual turnover.
