SK Hynix Develops High-Performance SSD for Edge-Side AI PCs

On June 28, TapTechNews reported that SK Hynix today (June 28) announced that the company has developed the highest performance in the industry solid-state drive SSD product PCB01 for edge-side AI PCs.

SK Hynix said: The company has taken the lead in applying the 'PCIe 5.0 x8 interface' technology to PCB01 to significantly improve data processing speed and other performances. After HBM and other ultra-high-performance DRAMs, the company has also successfully developed the highest standard product in the NAND flash memory solution to lead the memory market for AI.

TapTechNews note: SK Hynix officially explained that the x8 interface is the number of data input/output (I/O) interfaces between the NAND flash memory and the controller within the solid-state drive. The x4 interface product focuses on the general PC market, while the x8 interface product focuses on the high-performance PC market.

SK Hynix is conducting verification of the new product with global PC customers and plans to start mass production after the verification is completed this year and simultaneously launch products for large customers and general consumers.

In the solid-state drive product for PCs, the sequential read and write speeds of PCB01 reach 14GB/s and 12GB/s respectively. Compared with the previous generation product, the energy efficiency of PCB01 has increased by more than 30%, which can improve the stability of large-scale AI computing.

At the same time, SK Hynix has applied the SLC cache (SLCCaching) technology to this product. This technology enables some NAND flash memory cells to operate at a high-speed SLC mode.

TapTechNews note: NAND flash memory is divided into different specifications such as SLC (SingleLevelCell, 1 bit), MLC (MultiLevelCell, 2 bits), and TLC (TripleLevelCell, 3 bits) according to the number of data bits (bit) stored in each memory cell. As the storage capacity increases, more data can be stored in the same area, but the speed and stability will be correspondingly reduced.

In addition, PCB01 is also equipped with a security function to protect personal information, and it is configured with a security solution trust root (ROT) to prevent external attacks and data forgery and tampering, while protecting user passwords.

SK Hynix PCB01 will offer three capacities: 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB. An Hyun, vice president of the SK Hynix NAND Flash Solution Committee (N-S Committee), said: This new product has significantly improved performance compared to the previous generation. Currently, several central processing companies for edge-side AIPC have proposed compatibility verification cooperation. The company plans to smoothly conduct customer verification and mass production of this product to consolidate its leading position in the memory market for AI.
