Qualcomm's New VR Chips XR2 Gen3 and XR2+ Gen3

TapTechNews May 22nd, sources Roland Quandt and Brad Lynch recently disclosed that Qualcomm is providing test samples of Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen3 (SXR2330) and XR2+ Gen3 chips (SXR2350) to VR headset manufacturers. The related chip code-named 'Project Matrix' supports 16GB of RAM, UFS4.0, and 4K panels per eye.

Qualcomm launched the XR2+ Gen2 chip reference design plan at CES 2024, but currently, no VR headset manufacturers have actually shipped devices equipped with related chips. The currently tested Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen3 and XR2+ Gen3 chips are reportedly 'variants' of the XR2+ Gen2 chip.

Source Lynch disclosed that considering the R & D cycle, the related chips are 'almost the same' in function and bandwidth as XR2+ Gen2, but use the Oryon CPU in Snapdragon XElite (instead of Arm Cortex), and the GPU is reportedly also 'ore energy-efficient'.

For reference, the current VR giant Meta company uses XR2+ Gen1 chips in the QuestPro headset and XR2 Gen2 chips in the Quest3. It is expected that the company will use Snapdragon XR2 Gen3 series chips in the QuestPro2 or Quest4 headset, but it may have to wait for a considerable period of time.

In addition, TapTechNews previously reported that Samsung is currently developing a headset that 'competes with' Apple VisionPro, and this headset also has a certain possibility of switching to Snapdragon XR2 Gen3 series chips.
