SmartSelfDrive Addresses LS6 Automatic Parking Collision Incident

TapTechNews May 15th - SmartSelfDrive issued a statement on its official WeChat account today regarding an incident involving an LS6 automatic parking collision with a metal pillar. The company has reached a resolution with the user and will continue to improve the automatic parking system's ability to handle challenging scenarios, with updates to be delivered through OTA.

Earlier, Wang Kang, project director of SmartSelfDrive's autonomous driving center, explained the incident in detail. The pillar involved in the incident was a small-sized metal structure shaped like the Chinese character '工', which led to inaccuracies in the positioning of obstacles detected by the car's ultrasonic radar and cameras, resulting in a scrape against the pillar.

Wang stated that the team has collected a large amount of data on pillar scenarios for model training and is rapidly iterating to enhance the stability of the sensor fusion algorithm in similar weak parking scenarios. Through recent simulation evaluations, the system's ability to detect metal pillars and accurately locate them has significantly improved. After further fine-tuning and validation, an OTA update will be rolled out.

Both SmartSelfDrive's official account and Wang Kang have apologized to the affected user. Wang Kang has announced that as the head of the SmartDrive team, he will personally cover the user's repair expenses.

TapTechNews recap: A recent viral video showed an LS6 owner attempting to use the automatic parking feature in a parking lot. During the parking process, the front passenger side of the vehicle scraped against a pillar, but neither the parking system nor the driver noticed any issues. Despite the collision, the car successfully parked in the spot, albeit with a severely damaged front bumper.
