Japanese Car Manufacturers Collaborate on Next-Generation Software Development

TapTechNews May 17th news, according to Nikkei News, major Japanese car manufacturers such as Toyota, Nissan, and Honda will collaborate to develop software for the next generation of cars, involving technologies in 7 areas including generative AI, semiconductors, etc. This move will help reduce development costs.

TapTechNews learned from the report that the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan recently announced a digital transformation strategy for the automotive industry, calling for collaboration among car manufacturers. As a roadmap for the development of the next generation of cars by the 2030s, the focus of this strategy is Software Defined Vehicles (SDV), with Toyota, Nissan, and other companies planning to launch SDV starting from 2025.

It is worth noting that recently, Honda also announced signing a memorandum of understanding with IBM to jointly develop next-generation semiconductors and software technologies for Software Defined Vehicles (SDV).

Honda stated in the announcement that the use of intelligent/artificial intelligence technology is expected to significantly accelerate throughout society starting from 2030, and SDVs using these technologies are expected to become the mainstream of mobile travel. Compared to traditional mobile travel, SDVs are expected to significantly improve the required processing power and related power consumption, as well as the complexity of semiconductor design.
