Samsung Electronics Advances eMRAM Process Upgrade

TapTechNews May 31st report, a representative of Samsung Electronics said yesterday at the 'AI-PIM Seminar' in South Korea that the process upgrade of eMRAM memory is being gradually advanced as planned, and the technical development of 8nm eMRAM has basically been completed.

As a new type of memory, MRAM is based on magnetic principles, has non-volatility, and does not require continuous refreshing of data like DRAM memory, and is more energy-efficient;

At the same time, the write speed of MRAM is 1000 times that of NAND, supporting applications with higher requirements for the write rate.

eMRAM is MRAM for the embedded field. Samsung Electronics currently has the production capacity of 28nm eMRAM and has been supplying to terminal products such as smart watches.

According to TapTechNews' report in 2023, Samsung Electronics said at that time that it planned to mass-produce 14nm eMRAM in 2024; mass-produce 8nm eMRAM in 2026; and by 2027, it will further realize the mass production of 5nm eMRAM.

At present, Samsung Electronics has completed the development of 14nm eMRAM, and the development of 8nm eMRAM has basically been completed. It still plans to launch 5nm eMRAM in 2027.

Samsung Electronics believes that the demand for eMRAM in the automotive field will continue to grow in the future, and its current temperature resistance capacity has reached 150~160°C (302~320°F), which is sufficient to meet the stringent requirements of the semiconductor industry in the automotive industry.
