The recertified mechanical hard drives by Seagate (TapTechNews Note: commonly known as R drives in China) are currently used in the domestic market for customer hard drives to replace and repair, and some R drives also flow to the retail market from channel distributors.

In order to avoid information leakage caused by recovering information from retired mechanical hard drives, a large number of mechanical hard drives around the world are crushed and decomposed into small pieces of electronic waste after retirement, and are not directly reused.

This will lead to the waste of valuable materials, especially rare earth metals contained in mechanical hard drives. Considering the cost and pollution problems in the rare earth smelting process, the direct crushing practice is undoubtedly not sustainable.

As the manufacturer of mechanical hard drives, Seagate can provide proper data erasure for retired mechanical hard drives to prevent the information stored by the previous owners of these hard drives from being recovered and sold again after the recertification process to expand the actual service life of the hard drives.

Seagate claims that in the 2023 fiscal year, it successfully extended the life of about 1.19 million mechanical hard drives and solid-state drives through the recycling program and reduced the generation of 553 tons of electronic waste.

At present, the recertified mechanical hard drives launched by Seagate in the official eBay store include the Galaxy Exos and Barracuda series, both with a 2-year warranty.

Seagate has given a 15-16% discount from the list price on these recertified mechanical hard drives. In terms of specific prices, the 16TB Galaxy Exos recertified mechanical hard drive is priced at 209.99 US dollars (currently about 1,528 yuan).
