Samsung Electronics Restructures for AI Chip Focus, Shifts from Auto Chip

TapTechNews July 4th news, Businesskorea reported that the System LSI division of Samsung Electronics responsible for chip design is undergoing business and organizational restructuring and will give priority to the development of AI chips.

As part of the strategic adjustment, Samsung Electronics has reallocated the personnel of its automotive processor ExynosAuto (code name KITT3) project to the AI chip team, as this team is now the focus of Samsung's design work. It is introduced that Samsung has currently concentrated 100-150 designers specifically dedicated to the development of AI chips.

TapTechNews found that Samsung Electronics entered the high-performance automotive semiconductor market in 2018, when it launched the ExynosAuto brand, and last year released the ExynosAutoV920 based on the 5nm process and announced cooperation with Hyundai Motor Company to develop semiconductors.

However, with the rise of AI and the rapid development of products like ChatGPT, Samsung has adjusted the focus of its chip design work to this field.

Businesskorea also pointed out that the recent electric vehicle gap phenomenon (that is, the demand temporarily slows down before large-scale popularization) and factors such as global automakers (such as Hyundai Motor and Tesla) developing their own chips have also promoted this strategic transformation.
