Epic Games Files Lawsuit Against Google and Samsung for Alleged Anti-Competitive Behavior

TapTechNews October 1st, the game developer Epic Games filed a lawsuit against Google and Samsung yesterday (September 30th), alleging that these two companies have engaged in anti-competitive behavior that hinders Android users from downloading games and applications through other means than the Google Play app store.

The core of this lawsuit is the AutoBlocker that Samsung launched last October. This feature is enabled by default and aims to prevent Galaxy devices from installing unauthorized applications.

TapTechNews note: When this function is enabled, a warning pops up when users try to install applications from unknown sources. Although it can be temporarily disabled in the settings, the sideloading function is generally disabled.

Epic Games pointed out that the AutoBlocker consolidates the Google Play store as the only way to obtain applications on Samsung devices, hindering the competition of other app stores.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney said in an interview with TheVerge yesterday that although there is no direct evidence to prove that Google and Samsung colluded, he hopes to find evidence through this lawsuit.

The official of Samsung then responded and said: We plan to actively refute Epic Games' unfounded accusations. Google said that this lawsuit is groundless.
