Alipay to Upgrade Payment Service for Inbound Tourists with UnionPay International

TapTechNews July 10th news, with the introduction of a series of convenient entry policies such as visa-free, more and more global tourists come to China for travel, and inbound tourism continues to heat up.

In order to further help global tourists travel around China with one Alipay and enhance the payment convenience for inbound tourists, Alipay announced last night that it will jointly upgrade the payment service with UnionPay International. After inbound guests download and register the Alipay App, they can bind UnionPay cards issued overseas, and they can pay by scanning the Alipay QR code at tens of millions of merchants in daily scenes like domestic users.

According to the introduction, currently, more than 240 million UnionPay cards have been issued in 81 countries and regions overseas. With the implementation of this cooperation, these UnionPay cards can all be bound to the Alipay App, fully supporting various payment modes such as main scanning, being scanned, contactless payment, in-app payment, etc.

TapTechNews found out through inquiry that under the guidance and support of the People's Bank of China and the State Administration of Foreign Exchange, Alipay, in cooperation with the Network Clearing Corporation, the Bank of China, the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, and overseas wallets, etc., obtained the approval of two payment plans for inbound people in the country in 2020, including binding an overseas bank card after downloading the Alipay App (binding foreign card inside) and directly using an overseas digital wallet to scan the Alipay QR code (using foreign package inside).
