In the 10-K filing submitted to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Microsoft officially listed OpenAI as a competitor, and the list also includes companies such as Amazon, Google, and Meta that have always been there before.
Although Microsoft is the largest investor in OpenAI and has invested approximately $13 billion (TapTechNews note: currently about 93.917 billion yuan) and serves as its exclusive cloud service provider to apply OpenAI's AI models to commercial and consumer products, the cooperative relationship between the two companies seems to be undergoing subtle changes.
In the filing, Microsoft identified the creator of the ChatGPT chatbot, OpenAI, as a competitor in the field of artificial intelligence products as well as search and news advertising. Last week, OpenAI released a search engine prototype called SearchGPT.
The OpenAI spokesperson said that the relationship between the two companies has not changed at all, and Microsoft is still a good partner of OpenAI. When establishing the partnership, the two sides have already reached a consensus that there may be competition.
However, the relationship between the two companies this year has not been calm. In November last year, the OpenAI board removed CEO Sam Altman, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella had no knowledge of this. After Altman was quickly reinstated, OpenAI gave Microsoft a non-voting board seat, but Microsoft gave up this seat earlier this month.
In March this year, Nadella hired Mustafa Suleyman, the co-founder of DeepMind, to serve as the new CEO of Microsoft's AI department, and many Inflection employees also joined Microsoft. DeepMind is an AI research company established earlier than OpenAI and was acquired by Google in 2014.
