The First Smart Carbon Fiber Conductor in China Is Successfully Put into Use

TapTechNews September 26th news, comprehensive Xinhua News Agency, China Electric Power News Network reports, on September 26th, in Haixing County, Cangzhou City, Hebei Province, the first domestic smart carbon fiber conductor developed by State Grid Hebei Electric Power Research Institute - 110-kilovolt Bianshan Line (220-kilovolt Bianwu Station - 110-kilovolt Shannan Station) was successfully put into use.

Compared with the materials such as aluminum conductor steel-reinforced wire, aluminum-clad steel wire and aluminum alloy wire widely used in traditional power transmission lines, this smart carbon fiber composite core conductor not only has a smaller bending radius and better thermal stability, and also significantly reduces the sag (TapTechNews note: When the wire suspension height on the adjacent two poles is the same, the vertical distance between the lowest point of the wire and the connecting line between the two suspension points), and greatly improves the transmission capacity.

It is worth mentioning that its weight is reduced by about 20% compared with the traditional wire of the same specification, and the tensile strength exceeds 2500 MPa.

The smart carbon fiber conductor has real-time online monitoring function of the power transmission line, which can actively identify the line faults caused by man-made or natural disasters, including but not limited to complex working conditions such as icing, galloping, and vibration, and shorten the operation and maintenance repair time.

More importantly, this technology can go deep into the interior of the wire, accurately identify and locate those hidden defects that are difficult to detect by traditional means, thereby effectively avoiding potential safety hazards that may be caused by the wire operating with injuries, and achieving the goal of ensuring the safe and stable operation of the power grid from the source.
