China to invest $882 million in all-solid-state battery R&D

TapTechNews May 29th, according to Chinese Daily, China may invest approximately 6 billion RMB ($882 million) in the research and development of all-solid-state batteries, and six companies including CATL, BYD, FAW, SAIC, Weilan New Energy and Geely may receive government fundamental research and development support.

This project encourages qualified enterprises to conduct research and development on all-solid-state battery-related technologies. After strict screening, it is finally divided into seven major projects, focusing on different technical routes such as polymers and sulfides.

Since April, the industrialization of all-solid-state batteries in China has accelerated, and many enterprises have successively announced the research and development dynamics and mass production timetables of all-solid-state batteries. TapTechNews summarizes the recent all-solid-state battery-related news as follows:

On April 11th, the Qingdao Institute of Bioenergy and Bioprocess Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, made new progress in the research of sulfide electrolytes. The research team is currently preparing for the landing of a 20Ah sulfide all-solid-state battery molding production line and strives to realize the batch production of sulfide all-solid-state batteries first in 2026.

On April 12th, at the GAC Technology Day, GAC launched all-solid-state battery technology and it is expected to be equipped in the Haobo model in 2026. The person in charge said that the development difficulty of all-solid-state batteries is comparable to climbing 'Mount Everest', and breakthroughs need to be made in materials, design, manufacturing, integration, etc.

On April 28th, Wu Kai, the chief scientist of CATL, said when attending the Advanced Battery Frontier Technology Seminar that the goal is to produce all-solid-state batteries in small batches in 2027.

On May 24th, SAIC Group announced at its new energy technology conference that the all-solid-state battery is based on the polymer-inorganic composite electrolyte technical route. The first all-solid-state battery production line of SAIC Qingtao has been approved and plans to be completed by the end of 2025 and officially mass-produced in 2026.
