NHTSA Launches Preliminary Investigation into Fisker Ocean SUV

TapTechNews May 12 news, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the United States launched a preliminary investigation into the Fisker Ocean SUV on Friday. The investigation targets 6,813 vehicles produced in 2023, with complaints from users that the automatic emergency braking system of the vehicle will unexpectedly activate when there is no obvious obstacle in front.

The regulatory agency stated that the Office of Defects Investigation received eight complaints, all alleging that the automatic emergency braking systems of these vehicles activate when there are no obvious obstacles in front of the vehicles, causing sudden deceleration, with three complaints reporting injuries resulting from accidents.

According to TapTechNews, NHTSA's preliminary assessment will investigate the potential scope and severity of the issue to assess its impact on safety. The investigation may also be closed without taking any further action.

This investigation exacerbates Fisker's troubles, as the company is already under investigation by NHTSA for three accidents. Last month, NHTSA also received complaints that the company's electric vehicle doors sometimes cannot be opened.

In February this year, Fisker raised market concerns due to doubts about its ongoing operations, followed by its delisting from the New York Stock Exchange and the collapse of potential transaction negotiations with a large automaker in March.

This startup company announced in April that it failed to pay approximately $8.4 million in interest on a portion of its debt due in 2026 within a 30-day grace period. Due to the shortage of funds, the company initiated bankruptcy proceedings for its Austrian subsidiary on Tuesday and is seeking strategic solutions to raise funds to meet its debt obligations.
