3GPP Release 18 Standard Frozen, 5G Terminal Test Standardization Advances

TapTechNews June 26th news, at the 104th plenary session of 3GPP RAN held last week, the international standard 3GPP Release 18 technical standard was officially announced to be frozen, marking another important milestone in 5G technology.

China Academy of Information and Communications Technology stated that the related standard project of NR User Equipment Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) Over-the-Air (OTA) Test Method and Performance Requirements Enhancement led by the Tail Terminal Laboratory was also approved and completed simultaneously, successfully completing the R18 version evolution of the international standard 3GPP TS 38.151, and outputting the technical report 3GPP TR 38.761.

This indicates the introduction of the full version 5G Sub-6GHz and millimeter-wave band MIMO OTA performance requirement standard, and the industry has achieved a new breakthrough in the field of 5G terminal test standardization.

According to TapTechNews' inquiry, air interface testing of mobile terminals is currently the mainstream test method for measuring and evaluating the transmit and receive performance of the whole machine through the air interface, and its performance indicators directly affect the stable connection of the network, data transmission rate, and user experience.

The official pointed out that this R18 standard project further improves and enhances the 5G terminal MIMO OTA test method and performance requirements, covering 5G FR1 and FR2 bands, which will effectively guide the industry to conduct the measurement and verification of terminal MIMO OTA performance through repeatable and adjustable standardized means, ensuring the communication quality and user experience of 5G and 5G-A terminals in the real network environment, and supporting the high-quality development of the mobile communication industry.
