IDC Releases 2024 Q2 Global Smartphone Shipment Report Growth and Market Dynamics

TapTechNews July 15th news, IDC (International Data Corporation) today released the global smartphone shipment report for the second quarter of 2024. The data shows that the global smartphone shipments in this quarter increased by 6.5% year-on-year to 285.4 million units. Although this marks the fourth consecutive quarter of growth in shipments and boosts the expected recovery this year, the demand in many markets has not fully recovered yet and still faces challenges.

Nabila Popal, research director of the IDC's global tracking team, said that the top five companies all achieved year-on-year growth, but the competition among market leaders is becoming increasingly fierce, and the price range is polarized. Apple and Samsung continue to drive the high-end market and benefit from the continuous trend of high-end; many leading Chinese original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are increasing the shipments of low-end products to compete for market share in the case of weak demand. Therefore, the share of mid-range devices is challenged.

Nabila Popal said that due to the increase in the average selling price and the upsurge of generative AI phones, the current smart upgrade market is still exciting. It is expected that generative AI smartphones will become the fastest-growing mobile innovation we have seen so far and is expected to occupy 19% of the market share with shipments reaching 234 million units.

TapTechNews summarizes the specific data and situations as follows:

Samsung topped the list with a 18.9% shipment share (53.9 million units shipped, up 0.7% year-on-year), thanks to its strategic focus on flagship products and a strong AI strategy.

Xiaomi ranked third with a 14.8% market share (42.3 million units shipped, up 27.4% year-on-year), showing strong performance in China and emerging markets.
