China Becomes Second-Largest Open Source Contributor Country in the World

On August 22nd, according to Takungpao, on August 21st, KubeCon + CloudNativeCon + OpenSourceSummit + AI_devChina 2024, jointly hosted by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) and the Linux Foundation, opened in Hong Kong.

Chris Aniszczyk, the chief technology officer of CNCF, disclosed that CNCF hosts 191 open source projects, including well-known open source projects such as Kubernetes, Prometheus, and Envoy. These projects have cumulatively more than 240,000 contributors distributed in more than 190 countries around the world. Among them, China's total code contribution to CNCF projects is close to 1 million, and it has become the world's second-largest open source contributor country.

In addition, Stormy Peters, the vice president of the GitHub community, pointed out in the keynote speech that China has a vibrant open source software community that gathers 11 million software developers who are at the forefront of the open source and artificial intelligence fields.

According to the 2024 Status of Open Source Development in China report, Chinese developers (including those in Hong Kong) rank third in the number of global users on GitHub, and the current activity rate ranks first in the world, and it is expected to reach 18 to 20 million in 2026.

On GitHub, China ranks among the top ten in the world in terms of the community size of generative AI projects, demonstrating the important influence of Chinese developers in the global open source software field.

IT Home noticed that as the flagship conference of the global cloud computing native technology community, KubeCon + CloudNativeCon is held in Hong Kong for the first time this year.
