Intel Phasing Out 3DXPoint-Based Storage Products Update on Optane

TapTechNews July 3rd news, Intel is phasing out its storage products based on 3DXPoint technology. Currently, the vast majority of Optane-branded solid-state drives have been discontinued, but some products are still being shipped and will continue to be sold for a period of time.

Intel issued a statement announcing that its Optane Persistent Memory 200 series products for servers have entered the phase-out stage, and orders will no longer be accepted after December 31, 2024, and deliveries will stop after December 31, 2025.

However, Intel will continue to supply and ship until December 31, 2025, so these products are not immediately discontinued.

Intel customers need to determine their demand for Intel Optane Persistent Memory 200 series 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB memories (including 4-pack and 50-pack SKUs) by December 31, 2024, and submit the final order.

Please determine the remaining demand for the products listed in the 'Affected Products/Intel Ordering Codes' table and submit your 'Final Product Discontinuation Order' according to the 'Key Milestones' above. Intel will make commercially reasonable efforts to support the last order of Intel Optane Persistent Memory 200 series.

Optane originates from the 3DXPoint storage technology jointly developed by Intel and Micron, which has the advantages of both traditional DRAM and NAND, but it has been continuously losing money. In 2020, it exceeded 576 million US dollars (currently about 4.199 billion RMB), and in 2022, the entire business was gradually abandoned, with a related loss of 559 million US dollars (TapTechNews note: currently about 4.075 billion RMB).

The Intel Optane Persistent Memory 200 series module needs to be used in conjunction with Intel's third-generation Xeon Scalable Processor (IceLake), and it can also be used in combination with regular DDR4 memory.

It should be noted that the Optane Persistent Memory 200 series is not Intel's last 3DXPoint-based product. Intel is still selling the Optane Persistent Memory 300 series memory compatible with the fourth-generation Xeon Scalable Processor (Sapphire Rapids), and this series of memories can be used in combination with DDR5 memory.

Since the Optane Persistent Memory 300 series products were released in the first quarter of 2023, and Intel server platforms usually have a long life cycle, it is expected that the 300 series can still be supplied for at least two years, provided Intel has enough 3DXPoint memory.
