Volkswagen Adds Support for ChatGPT in New-Generation Infotainment System

TapTechNews June 22 news, on the 21st local time, Volkswagen announced that models equipped with the new-generation infotainment system now have support for ChatGPT.

In the European region, the models introducing ChatGPT include the all-electric ID. series, the new Golf, the new Tiguan, and the new Passat, and users can access ChatGPT through the vehicle's built-in IDA voice assistant. It is introduced that the experience brought by AI on board is far beyond the past, and users can ask the car to read out the search results directly or interact with the car using natural language.

For example, the vehicle-mounted system connected to ChatGPT can provide information about tourist attractions, report past football matches or help solve math problems. The driver only needs to talk to the assistant in natural language without having to take their eyes off the road.

Compared with the existing vehicle-mounted voice assistant, the new system focuses on conversational and natural interaction. When a passenger says I'm cold, the system will turn on the air conditioning; when a passenger says I need bread, the system will help you find nearby stores. In addition, the new system can also provide more abundant functions, such as reading detailed recipes or children's stories aloud to make the journey more fulfilling and interesting.

If local Volkswagen owners have already registered an account for the VWConnect connectivity assistant, they can use the upgraded voice assistant without registering an additional account. If the built-in voice assistant of the vehicle-mounted system cannot answer the user's question, it will be transferred to ChatGPT, and then the answer will be read out by the voice assistant.

According to TapTechNews' previous report, during the CES 2024 exhibition, Kai Grünitz, head of technical development at Volkswagen, said: For me, this (vehicle-mounted ChatGPT) is not just a gimmick. We understand the usage habits of users by studying home intelligent systems such as Amazon's Alexa and Echo. We hope to provide the same convenient and smooth interaction experience in the car.
