ByteDance collaborates with Broadcom on AI processor development

TapTechNews June 24, Reuters reported that ByteDance is collaborating with US-based Broadcom to develop an AI processor to ensure a sufficient number of high-end chips.

Insiders disclosed that this AI processor has a manufacturing process of 5 nm and will be manufactured by TSMC. Although the design work is progressing smoothly, the tape-out that marks the end of the design stage and the start of manufacturing has not begun yet.

ByteDance and Broadcom have always been business partners. Broadcom once stated in a statement that ByteDance purchased its Tomahawk 5-nm chip and its Bailly switch for AI computer clusters. The cooperation between ByteDance and Broadcom will help significantly reduce procurement costs and ensure a stable supply of high-end chips.

In addition to Douyin and TikTok, ByteDance also operates a chatbot similar to ChatGPT, Doubao, with monthly active users reaching 26 million.

In order to advance artificial intelligence, ByteDance has previously purchased many Nvidia chips. It is reported that ByteDance allocated 2 billion US dollars (TapTechNews note: currently about 14.584 billion Chinese yuan) last year for purchasing Nvidia chips.

The ByteDance official website shows that ByteDance has currently released hundreds of semiconductor-related positions, including 15 positions of ASIC chip designers. A source said that ByteDance has also poached many top talents from other Chinese AI chip companies.
