Nissan to Produce EVs for Dongfeng in Wuhan

TapTechNews June 26 - According to a report by Nikkei today, Nissan Motor will start to produce electric vehicles for its Chinese joint venture partner Dongfeng Motor in Wuhan by the end of this year.

The factory in Wuhan currently produces two SUV models, the Ariya and the X-Trail. It is reported that by producing electric vehicles for Dongfeng Motor, Nissan aims to reduce fixed costs and increase the operating rate of the factory.

Earlier this month, domestic media reported that a new pure electric family SUV named Zhiyin under the brand of Lantu will be produced at Dongfeng Nissan Yunfeng Factory, which is a production base for Dongfeng Nissan's pure electric model Ariya. In response, an informed person from Dongfeng Company said that Dongfeng Nissan is actually renting the factory to produce its models, and Lantu also adopts a similar model.

In the second half of this month, Nissan Motor spread the news that it has officially announced the closure of its passenger car factory in Changzhou, Jiangsu. A Nissan spokesperson said that the factory jointly operated by Nissan and its partner in Changzhou - Dongfeng Motor has stopped production. The factory mainly produces Qashqai SUV, with an annual output of about 130,000 units. Nissan's total production in China is 1.6 million units, of which the Changzhou factory accounts for 8% of its production.

According to a previous report by TapTechNews, in May 2024, the sales volume of Dongfeng Nissan (including Nissan, Venucia and Infiniti brands) was 61,725 units, a decrease of 1.7% year-on-year. The sales volume of the light commercial vehicle business sector (Zhengzhou Nissan) was 2,508 units, a decrease of 23.1% year-on-year.
