Researchers said that existing spreadsheet applications have rich functions and provide a large number of options for users in terms of layout and format, so traditional AI large language models are difficult to handle spreadsheet processing scenarios.

And SpreadsheetLLM is an AI model specifically designed for spreadsheet applications. Microsoft has also developed SheetCompressor (to compress spreadsheets) to enable SpreadsheetLLM to better understand and process spreadsheet data.

TapTechNews cited the abstract part of the paper, and the SpreadsheetLLM model is mainly composed of three modules: structure-anchor-based compression, reverse index transformation, and data format-aware aggregation.

SpreadsheetLLM has greatly improved the performance of spreadsheet detection tasks. In the context learning setting of GPT4, it is 25.6% higher than the ordinary method; the cost of using tokens has been reduced by 96%, and it can provide better processing results.

There is currently no news about when or whether Microsoft plans to make SpreadsheetLLM available to the public. The paper points out that the model still has some limitations and cannot efficiently handle spreadsheets using background colors and borders; SheetCompressor cannot currently compress cells containing natural language, etc.
