Character.AI Signs Agreement with Alphabet, Founders to Return to Google

TapTechNews August 5th news, the startup Character.AI announced last Friday that the company has signed an agreement with Google's parent company, Alphabet, granting the search engine giant a non-exclusive license to use its large language model.

TapTechNews noticed that the co-founders of Character.AI, Noam Shazeer and Daniel DeFreitas, will return to Google, and they were both former employees of Google before.

Character.AI stated in the blog that through the agreement with Google, they will obtain more funds, but did not disclose the specific amount. Dominic Perella, the general counsel of Character.AI, will serve as its interim chief executive officer, effective immediately.

We particularly welcome the return of Noam, who is an outstanding machine learning researcher and he will join the Google DeepMind research team along with a few colleagues, a Google spokesperson said.

In March this year, Microsoft spent 650 million US dollars to hire the co-founder of the artificial intelligence startup Inflection and dozens of its employees. In June, Amazon hired several co-founders and their employees of another artificial intelligence startup Adept.

Character.AI has previously raised 193 million US dollars in venture capital funds.
