Loongson Technology Holds Performance Briefing for 2023 and First Quarter of 2024

Thanks to TapTechNews reader N No. for the clues!

TapTechNews reported on May 15 that Loongson Technology held a performance briefing for the 2023 and the first quarter of 2024, where the Chairman and General Manager Hu Weiwu answered a series of questions from readers.

Some Q&A highlights:

Q: How does Loongson compete with Huawei, which is strong in manpower, financial resources, and brand influence? What are the differentiation advantages between Loongson and Huawei?

A: Huawei follows the IBM model, selling complete machines and solutions; Loongson follows the Intel model, focusing on selling chips and building an industrial ecosystem. Both have their own strengths.

Q: How many units of Loongson 3A6000 chip need to be sold to recover the investment cost?

A: Due to Loongson's high degree of independence, all IP for the 3A6000 chip is self-developed, so the R&D investment does not include the cost of purchasing IP, which is very high. Chips with this performance level, such as the 3A6000, would cost billions to purchase IPs like CPU cores, DDR4 interfaces, high-speed IO interfaces. If considering only the one-time cost of producing chips and personnel-related expenses, selling several hundred thousand chips can recoup the cost.

Q: Will Loongson provide a compatible version of Hongmeng OS for the community?

A: According to general commercial rules, it should be Hongmeng providing a version for Loongson, rather than Loongson providing a Hongmeng OS image.

Q: Is there a plan to collaborate with editing software like Kinemaster Pro or Premiere Pro for Loongson?

A: We will actively promote compatibility with video editing software. At the same time, Loongson has developed its own video editing software Loongmedia, which has reached a usable level.

Q: What is the progress of the adaptation between Loongson 3A6000 and the open-source Hongmeng OS? Will there be further compatibility with the open-source Hongmeng ecosystem in the future?
