According to the announcement, through sincere negotiation, Sharp Corporation (Sharp) and Beijing Xiaomi Mobile Software Co., Ltd. (Xiaomi) reached an agreement on the cross-licensing of patents related to their wireless communication technologies. This patent cross-licensing agreement also ended the lawsuit that Sharp filed in China in September 2022.

Sharp stated that it has licensed its standard essential patents of wireless communication technology to many leading companies in the telecommunications equipment and automotive industries in Japan, the United States, Europe, China, and South Korea. Sharp continuously expands the number of licensees and continues to grant its standard essential patent licenses to any other party under fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory conditions.

Sharp is a Japanese mobile phone supplier and has been committed to the development of core technologies of mobile communication systems such as 3G, 4G, and 5G for more than 20 years.

Regarding the specific content of the cross-licensing agreement and lawsuit, Sharp told Nikkei: We have signed a confidentiality agreement with Xiaomi, so it is not convenient to answer.

Sharp has more than 6,000 essential patents related to LTE (4G) and the new-generation communication standard 5G. TapTechNews found out that Sharp had previously signed cross-licensing agreements with OPPO, vivo, and Huawei, etc.
