It is reported that currently most social media apps automatically recommend content through a customized algorithm. According to the new law, minors can only see videos of accounts they have already followed unless they obtain parental consent for automatic recommendations. The law also imposes a ban on the platform: unless there is verifiable parental consent, the platform shall not send relevant recommended posts to minors between midnight and 6 a.m..

The next step, social platforms need to create a system to verify user age and parental consent status. After the rules are finally determined, social platforms will have 180 days to integrate the new rules into their own apps, and the company will face a fine of $5,000 for each violation.

The law will not take effect immediately. The task of the state attorney general Letitia James at present is to formulate rules to determine the mechanism for verifying user age and parental consent. After the rules are finalized, social media companies will have 180 days to implement these regulations.

The New York Children's Data Protection Act limits the behavior of data platforms collecting data of minors without consent and data sales, and the law will take effect next year.
