Apple's VisionPro Update 2nd Generation in the Works, OS Improvements

TapTechNews June 24 news, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman revealed in the latest issue of the PowerOn newsletter that although the priority is not high at present, Apple is still developing the second-generation VisionPro head-mounted display, and its internal code name is N109. From an appearance perspective, N109 is generally similar to the current model but will be equipped with a faster processor and upgraded external cameras. Meanwhile, Apple has also been constantly exploring ways to reduce weight and improve wearing comfort.

It is reported that Apple has not given up on the high-end head-mounted display market, but the launch time of the second-generation VisionPro will be further postponed. Just as reported in April this year, in order to launch a more mass-market head-mounted display product, Apple postponed the originally scheduled second-generation VisionPro release until the end of 2026 or later.

In addition, Apple is also continuously improving the VisionPro operating system, visionOS. TapTechNews noticed that the second version of visionOS has brought many improvements, such as functions like starting the main interface through new gesture operations, re-arranging application icons, and converting regular photos into 3D images. Gurman said that Apple has begun to develop the visionOS3 system with the code name Discovery, and it is expected to bring more enhanced features next year.

According to Gurman, the development process of the Apple Watch may offer us some inspiration. When the first-generation Apple Watch was initially launched, people didn't clearly know its specific purpose. At that time, the Apple Watch was more like a novelty or a fashion accessory. Later, Apple shifted its focus to health, fitness tracking, and communication functions, and the appeal of the Apple Watch thus became clearer. Apple may consider adopting a similar strategy to optimize the positioning of VisionPro. Instead of being a jack-of-all-trades, it can focus on functions such as video viewing, FaceTime calls, and as an extended monitor for Mac computers.

Gurman also said that Apple should abandon the assumption that users will fall in love with third-party applications (which has not been successful on both the Apple Watch and the Apple TV), or the idea of turning VisionPro into a complete computer. This will help Apple smooth out its marketing ideas before launching a more mass-market product.
