15 Students in Spain Sentenced for Using AI to Create and Spread Indecent Photos

TapTechNews July 12th news, The Guardian of the UK reported on July 9th that 15 students were sentenced to one year of probation by a Spanish local court for using AI to create and spread indecent photos of female classmates, and this case has also triggered extensive discussions about the abuse of DeepFake technology.

Parents living in the city of Almendralejo, Spain, reported last year that someone used DeepFake technology to create indecent photos of their daughters and spread them in the local WhatsApp social application, and the police then started to investigate this matter.

The mother of one of the victims said that as early as July last year, these DeepFake photos appeared on WhatsApp.

She told Reuters reporters at that time: Many girls are completely scared and have severe anxiety attacks because they are silently enduring this kind of pain. They feel very bad and are afraid to tell others and afraid of being blamed for it.

After the investigation, the police locked on several teenagers aged 13-15.

On Tuesday this week, the Spanish province of Badajoz pronounced that 15 minors have been convicted of 20 counts of creating child abuse images and 20 counts of violating the moral integrity of the victims, and each defendant was sentenced to one year of probation and was ordered to attend courses on gender and equality awareness and responsible use of technology.

TapTechNews note: According to Spanish law, minors under the age of 14 cannot be prosecuted, but their cases will be referred to the child protection department, which can force them to attend rehabilitation courses.
