General Motors to Pay Fine and Surrender Greenhouse Gas Credits for Emissions Excess

TapTechNews July 4th news, General Motors will pay a fine of 145.8 million US dollars (TapTechNews note: currently about 1.063 billion yuan) to settle the investigation of excessive emissions (the news is not official and comes from Reuters), and will have several hundred million US dollars worth of greenhouse gas credit confiscated.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released an announcement yesterday (July 3rd) that General Motors has agreed to return about 50 million tons of greenhouse gas credits to solve the problem of excessive carbon dioxide emissions from its cars.

The EPA said that during the investigation, it was found that about 5.9 million cars of General Motors from 2012 to 2018 models had excessive carbon dioxide emissions problems.

The post-production tests required by the environmental protection agency and General Motors showed that the emissions of these vehicles were more than 10% higher than the emissions claimed by General Motors in the initial compliance report.

The regulatory agency said that these vehicles will not be recalled. General Motors does not need to repair these vehicles, and also gives up the greenhouse gas credits stipulated by the regulatory authorities to make up for the increased emissions.
