China's Consumer XR Device Market in 2024 AR Sales Rise While VR Declines

TapTechNews August 26th news, according to the report data of China VR/AR Devices Retail Market Monthly Tracker released by RUNTO, in the first half of 2024, the total omnichannel sales of consumer XR devices (including AR and VR) in China was 261,000 units, a year-on-year decrease of 20.4%.

Among them, the market performance of VR and AR devices is quite different. In the first half of this year, the VR sales decreased by 41% year-on-year, while the AR sales increased by 49% year-on-year, becoming the main source of the overall XR market increment.

TapTechNews noticed that according to the online monitoring data of RUNTO, in the online market brand sales share of AR devices in China in the first half of 2024, Thunderbird Innovation, XREAL, INMO and Rokid ranked the top four, and the combined sales share reached 89.2%. Among the mid-range brands, Xingji Meizu and Huawei emerged suddenly and seized about 8% of the share, and the competition gradually intensified, while lowering the market concentration at the same time.

The report said that currently, the mainstream AR glasses in the market can mainly be divided into split type and all-in-one type. The split type does not have an independent computing unit and needs to be connected to external devices (such as smart phones, tablet computers, PCs or dedicated computing modules) to obtain computing power and power. The all-in-one AR glasses have built-in necessary components such as processors, memory, sensors and power supplies, and have independent computing capabilities. The current sales proportions of the two in the market are 80.7% and 19.3% respectively.

In addition, according to the online monitoring data of RUNTO, in the first half of 2024, AR devices adopting the MicroLED screen + optical waveguide solution occupied 13.3% of the overall market share.

RUNTO predicted that the annual sales volume of AR devices in the omnichannel in 2024 will reach 281,000 units, an increase of nearly 40% year-on-year.
