Apple Sent RFI for OLEDos Development, May Target Budget Version Headset

TapTechNews June 29. According to local time on Friday, TheElec, a South Korean media, citing industry sources, reported that Apple recently sent a Request for Information (RFI) related to the development of OLED on Silicon (hereinafter referred to as OLEDos) to companies such as Samsung Display and LG Display.

RFI is a stage before the Request for Quotation (RFQ) sent by the whole machine manufacturer to the parts manufacturer when the product specification is determined. At the RFI stage, the manufacturer will consult the technical information required for product development.

TapTechNews note: OLEDos is a method of applying color filter (CF) on OLED. WOLED + CFOLEDos means that white light expresses colors through RGB color filters, and the VisionPro headset that Apple has launched also uses WOLED + CFOLEDos.

It is reported that the product specifications required by Apple this time include the screen size of 2.0 to 2.1 inches and the pixel density of approximately 1700 PPI. This is different from the existing OLEDos specification of VisionPro (the screen size is 1.42 inches and the pixel density is 3391 PPI). Due to the lower pixel density of OLEDos mentioned in the RFI, it is speculated that it is for the budget version headset.

Industry insiders believe that the background of Apple's action is to expand the market of headsets and other products by launching popular products and stabilizing the OLEDos supply chain.

According to a previous report by TapTechNews, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman disclosed in last week's PowerOn newsletter that Apple is developing a budget version of VisionPro. The headset with the code name N107 is said to have a narrower FOV (field of view) (TapTechNews note: The current VisionPro is about 100 degrees), and it needs to be connected to a Mac/iPhone to be used, the logic is similar to AppleWatch.

Gurman reiterated that Apple hopes to launch a more budget Vision headset at the earliest by the end of 2025, nevertheless, Apple is still trying to reduce costs while retaining key features. By comparison, the starting price of the current VisionPro headset is 29,999 yuan.
