The South Korean Nuclear Safety and Security Commission said in a statement on Thursday that the agency approved an administrative penalty of up to 10.5 million Korean won (TapTechNews note: currently about $55,356). An official said that the largest company in South Korea may face further penalties for two other violations.

In May this year, two workers in Samsung's factory in Icheon (about 40 kilometers south of Seoul) were exposed to radiation levels far above the annual limit and were sent to the hospital when performing maintenance work on equipment for analyzing silicon wafers. According to the statement, due to the negligence of Samsung's radiation safety team, the safety device that automatically shuts off radiation when the equipment door is opened did not activate.

Samsung said it will cooperate with the investigation and provide support to the affected workers. The company also said it will do its best to avoid similar incidents from happening again.
