China's Largest Liquid Air Energy Storage Project Breaks Ground

TapTechNews August 21 news, the official website of China Green Development Investment Group Co., Ltd. announced yesterday (August 20) that the world's largest liquid air energy storage demonstration project has broken ground.

TapTechNews quoted the company's announcement that the Qinghai 60,000-kilowatt/600,000-kilowatt-hour liquid air energy storage demonstration project has successfully completed the goal of all the main construction and equipment foundations coming out of zero meters, and officially entered the stage of core equipment installation from the civil construction stage.

Project Profile

The Qinghai liquid air energy storage demonstration project is located in Golmud City, Haixi Mongolian-Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, with an installed capacity of 60,000 kilowatts/600,000 kilowatt-hours and equipped with a 250,000-kilowatt photovoltaic, and was selected into the new energy storage pilot demonstration project of the National Energy Administration.

After the project is completed and put into operation, it will become the demonstration project with the world's first power generation in the field of liquid air energy storage and the world's largest energy storage scale.

Project Breakthrough

The project adopts a new generation of compressed air energy storage technology, based on low-temperature air liquefaction and cold storage technology, stores electrical energy in the form of liquefied air at normal pressure, low temperature, and high density, and solves the problems of air storage and constant pressure release. It has outstanding advantages such as realizing large-scale long-term energy storage, being clean and low-carbon, safe, long life, and not being restricted by geographical conditions.

Compared with traditional energy storage technologies, it has a smaller floor area, greater energy storage density, and more flexible and diverse application scenarios, especially in the fields of renewable energy consumption, power grid peak shaving, standby black start, supporting distributed power microgrids, and comprehensive energy services, it has outstanding advantages.

The centrifugal compressor unit supporting the project was successfully offline in the production workshop on August 17, which also laid the foundation for the completion and grid connection at the end of the year.

As the key equipment of the compression module of the project, the impeller diameter of the compressor unit reaches 2 meters, and the whole machine weight is equivalent to the total weight of fifty adult elephants. It is the world's largest horizontally split centrifugal compressor unit, which has the characteristics of realizing quick one-key start and stop of the whole machine, strong fatigue resistance, and energy saving and consumption reduction operation in all seasons, and its performance reaches the international leading level.

This compressor unit, as the heart of the project , gathers a number of cutting-edge technological innovation achievements. Through the optimized axial air inlet structure of the precise design, the efficiency of the compressor has been significantly improved by up to 2% to 3%, and this improvement directly enhances the overall efficiency of the project.
