China Telecom Leads in TianTong Satellite Terminal Technology and Standard Formulation

TapTechNews August 6th news, according to the People's Post and Telecommunication News, currently, consumer-grade direct-to-satellite terminals are gradually popularized to the general public, but there are still problems such as inconsistent test verification standards and incompatibility between chips and verification platforms in the industry.

Based on the large scientific and technological innovation device capability platform, the test group of China Telecom Research Institute, in conjunction with instrument manufacturers, completed the industry's first set of simulation platform capability building that supports satellite + cellular format. This platform is compatible with mainstream terminal chips and provides capabilities such as OTA full-angle performance tests, hybrid network mixed-frequency tests, and satellite channel model simulation tests in multiple scenarios.

The test group, in conjunction with many TianTong satellite terminal manufacturers such as Huawei, Honor, Xiaomi, and OPPO, carried out a number of key technical tests on the performance of consumer-grade TianTong terminals in the satellite cellular terminal test simulation platform.

The test group applied the TianTong cellular fusion terminal technical solution and test standard proposed by the China Telecom Research Institute to test and evaluate the terminal performance in scenarios such as RF performance, voice SMS service, network access delay, power consumption, and network switching. Realized that the network access performance of consumer-grade TianTong terminals increased by more than 30% and the power consumption performance increased by more than 15%. Through the comparison of live network environment tests, the test group also innovatively completed the tests of complex channel scenarios such as simulated cellular coverage interference, rain and fog fading, and tree obstruction, excluded the unstable factors in the live network, reduced the terminal test cost, and at the same time increased the test automation case coverage rate to more than 60%, improving the test efficiency. Currently, the satellite cellular terminal test simulation platform has been released and opened for use at the 2024 5.17 World Telecommunication and Information Society Day Conference Forum.

In addition, in the CCSATC5WG10 working group, China Telecom, as the leading unit, in conjunction with the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, the National Radio Monitoring Center, Boding Shihua, Huawei, Honor, vivo and many other units, started the work of formulating a series of standards for public multi-mode handheld terminals of the TianTong-1 satellite mobile communication system, and the test results of the large scientific and technological innovation device also provided a research basis for the standard formulation work.

At present, the TianTong satellite has covered China's mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan regions and Southeast Asian countries. As an effective supplement and extension of the terrestrial communication network, satellite communication can provide all-weather and all-day mobile communication services to ensure that users can access the satellite network as needed and provide guaranteed communication for users.

TapTechNews noticed that China Telecom has currently jointly launched more than ten consumer-type terminals supporting direct satellite connection functions with domestic mainstream mobile phone terminal manufacturers such as Huawei, Honor, Xiaomi, OPPO, vivo, and ZTE, and also jointly launched the world's first flagship car equipped with TianTong satellite communication function with BYD.
