Cadence Demonstrates World's First PCIe7.0 Fiber Optic Connection Solution

TapTechNews June 18th news, Cadence at the recently held PCI-SIG DevCon 2024 demonstrated the world's first PCIe7.0 fiber optic connection solution.

Cadence successfully demonstrated fiber optic PCIe7.0 signal transceiver with a transmission speed of 128 GT/s at the conference site by using a linearly pluggable optical element, without DSP/Retimer (TapTechNews Note: Retimer).

During the two-day conference, Cadence's demonstration system maintained an ultra-low uncorrected forward error code rate of approximately 3 * 10^-8, about 3% of the PCIe specification value of 1 * 10^-6, providing sufficient margin for forward error correction (FEC) and thus ensuring the signal quality.

With the evolution of the PCIe protocol version, high-speed PCIe signals have increasingly strict requirements for the transmission medium. Existing copper PCIe cables will face problems such as low signal quality and high latency in the future, and will generate more heat while having a shorter coverage range.

And fiber optic-based PCIe connections can solve the above deficiencies of copper signal links and meet the various requirements of data center systems for high-speed PCIe interconnection. Therefore, PCI-SIG has established the PCIe Optical Connection Working Group last year to be responsible for developing related technologies.
