Amazing Discovery A Galaxy with Record-breaking Redshift

TapTechNews May 31 news, Astronomers with the help of the James Webb Space Telescope (James Webb Space Telescope) near-infrared spectrometer (NIRSpec), observed the galaxy JADES-GS-z14-0 with a redshift value of 14.32 from October 2023 to January 2024.

According to the measurement results, its age is about 290 million years after the Big Bang, and it is the oldest and most distant galaxy on record.

TapTechNews note: In the fields of physics and astronomy, redshift refers to the phenomenon that the electromagnetic radiation of an object reduces its frequency for some reason. In an expanding universe, light waves will be stretched, its wavelength increases, and becomes more and more red (redshift).

The previous record holder is JADES-GS-z13-0, which was discovered in 2022 with a redshift of 13.2 and is located about 330 million years after the Big Bang and about 13 billion light-years from the earth.

The JADES team also discovered two galaxies with redshift values over 10 and another galaxy with a redshift value around 13.

What surprises the scientists about JADES-GS-z14-0 is its luminosity. Judging from the infrared image, astronomers believe that the diameter of this galaxy is about 1600 light-years. Its luminosity confirms that the light comes from young stars rather than supermassive black holes. They also pointed out that such luminosity indicates that the galaxy contains hundreds of millions of times the mass of the sun's stars!
