James Webb Discovers Rare Protostellar Outflows

TapTechNews June 26 news, astronomers with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), discovered a rare protostellar outflows (protostellaroutflows) at a place about 1,300 light-years away from the Earth, and a total of 12 stars are neatly lined up and ejecting material flows.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) was jointly developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CanadianSpaceAgency), and reached the designated destination, namely the Sun-Earth Lagrange point L2 about 1.5 million kilometers from the Earth, in January 2022.

Astronomers have observed many celestial bodies in the universe with the Webb Space Telescope, providing valuable images and scientific data for humans to deeply study the universe.

The Webb Space Telescope has created another first for astronomy. In the Serpens Nebula (SerpensNebula) about 1,300 light-years away from the Earth, a rare protostellar outflow has been discovered, providing new insights for scientists about the basic rules of star generation and growth.

The Serpens Nebula is about one to two million years old and is very young in the universe. Its protostars are even younger, about 100,000 years old, and the recently discovered outflow is about 200 to 1,400 years old.

Newborn stars will eject material flows, which is known in astronomy as outflow. After the outflowing materials collide with the surrounding molecular gas cloud, they will electrify the gas cloud materials.

Scientists can detect the protostellar outflows emitted by at least 20 newborn stars in the images of the JWST. As shown in the upper left corner of the following figure, a group of 12 stars are neatly lined up ejecting material flows.

Neatly lined up protostellar outflows are very rare and have never been observed before, so little is known about them. Scientists speculate that these 12 stars formed along the same gas filament at the same time. A powerful magnetic field is likely guiding this filament and may direct the protostellar outflow in the same direction.
