Apple to Make Big Adjustments to Screen Recording Permissions in macOS 15 Sequoia

TapTechNews August 7th news, Apple plans to make significant adjustments to the management of screen recording permissions in the official version of macOS 15 Sequoia to be released this autumn. In the future, users will need to reconfirm whether to allow applications to access the screen and audio once a week and after each restart of the computer.

This change means that when users use applications that require screen recording permissions such as screenshot tools, screen recording software, and video conferencing software, they will frequently receive system pop-up prompts. According to 9to5mac, Apple has confirmed to developers that this is not a system failure, but an intentional privacy protection measure.

TapTechNews noticed that the new system pop-up will clearly inform users that the application can access the computer's screen and audio and may collect information of all open applications on the desktop, and users can choose to continue allowing access or go to the system settings to modify the permissions.

In addition to third-party screenshot tools such as CleanShotX, this change will also affect many applications that use the screen sharing function, including Discord, Zoom, and Slack. It is worth noting that even applications that use the ScreenCaptureKit framework introduced in macOS 12 will also be affected.

In fact, any application that requires screen recording permissions will be restricted, including menu bar management tool Bartender and color picker applications. However, the SCContentSharingPickerAPI introduced by Apple in macOS Sonoma can help some applications avoid frequent pop-ups. However, this API is not compatible with a large number of current applications that require screen recording permissions.

Apple has not yet provided a detailed explanation for this policy change, and the final policy may be adjusted before the official release of macOS Sequoia.
