CITIC Heavy Industries Completes Manufacturing of 5600mm Wide and Thick Plate Rolling Mill

TapTechNews August 23rd news, CITIC Heavy Industries announced yesterday that it has successfully completed the manufacturing process of the key parts of the King of Rolling Mills, the 5600mm wide and thick plate roughing mill, and successfully assembled.

According to CCTV News, on the morning of August 23rd, the 5600mm wide and thick plate roughing mill housing was offline in Luoyang, Henan, marking that the world's wide and thick plate rolling mills have entered the 5600mm era.

TapTechNews noted that currently, this rolling mill is the world's largest wide and thick plate rolling mill in specification, and is known as the King of Rolling Mills.

In its production process, the most critical and difficult to manufacture is the rolling mill housing and backup roll. The two housings were successfully cast on October 9th and November 17th, 2023, respectively. The single housing is as high as 53.5 feet (about 16.32 meters) and is cast with a 7-package molten steel combined casting process; the diameter of the backup roll is 7.9 feet (about 2.4 meters) and the total length is 38.16 feet (about 11.63 meters), which is the largest backup roll in the world at present.

This super-large specification wide and thick plate rolling mill adopting the mode of domestic design + domestic manufacturing for the first time. Previously, domestic wide and thick plate rolling mills above 4300mm all adopted foreign technologies. After the completion of this unit, the annual production capacity of the production line can reach 2.6 million tons, which is used to meet the needs of high-end plate steel for offshore engineering, shipbuilding, new energy, construction machinery, etc.
