TapTechNews June 7th, Microsoft's chief research scientist, Jaime Teevan, defended the Recall function in the Windows 11 system during his speech at the AI Research Institute of Stanford University, and also responded to the negative reports about privacy and security issues.

Microsoft's recently released Copilot+ has sparked much discussion, and one of the AI functions called Recall has received particular attention. This function can automatically capture and record the user's computer screen, enabling the user to review past operations like recalling memories.

TapTechNews attached the main contents of the Q&A as follows:

Will Recall collect user data? And are these data local and private?

Teevan said, This is a very good question. The importance of data and this AI revolution are really changing the way we understand data.

Teevan simply emphasized, All data are stored locally. The Recall function runs locally and will not store data in the cloud.

Is the data of Recall encrypted?

Teevan said, Yes, as a company, we attach great importance to data protection, which is also one of our fundamental tasks. Therefore, Recall is a function to capture information. It is a local function of Windows, and no information goes to the cloud, and all information is stored locally.

The Recall will automatically extract OCR data from each screenshot by calling a local AI, and the OCR data is stored in a SQLite database in the user's folder, and certain permissions are required to access this database.
