Low Replacement Rate of Electric Vehicle Batteries

TapTechNews May 27th news, a study from Recurrent shows that the replacement rate of electric vehicle batteries is generally low. Excluding well-known recall events such as the Chevrolet BoltEV, only 2.5% of battery packs in electric vehicles produced from 2011 to 2024 have been replaced.

TapTechNews noted that critics of electric vehicles often cite the high cost of battery replacement (up to half the value of the vehicle) as one of the arguments that electric vehicles are not as good as fuel vehicles. Indeed, battery replacement is a significant expense for consumers.

However, the study by Recurrent shows that battery replacement is actually very rare. Although there have been battery recall events in General Motors and Hyundai in the past few years, the batteries of the vast majority of electric vehicles are still used in the original vehicles. This is especially true for Tesla, which is the main force in the sales of electric vehicles in the US.

The research results of Recurrent show: Excluding large-scale recall events, the battery replacement rate for all years and models is only 2.5%. Compared to last year, the increase in this ratio is entirely due to the increase in older models. For older models before 2015, the battery replacement rate is 13%, while the battery replacement rate for new models from 2016 and later is less than 1%.

Even in the case of battery-related recall events, it has not brought much financial loss to consumers. The study by Recurrent shows that so far, battery replacements within the warranty period have been borne by the automakers themselves.
