Apple iPhone 16Pro and 16ProMax Now Support Shooting ProRAW Photos in JPEG-XL Format

TapTechNews September 14th news, the tech media 9to5Mac released a blog post yesterday (September 13th), reporting that Apple iPhone 16Pro and iPhone 16ProMax users can take ProRAW photos in JPEG-XL format.

The source code mining is applicable to the firmware version of iPhone 16Pro and iPhone 16ProMax. In the ProRAW setting code, it is found that users can choose to save in JPEG-XL format.

Apple also emphasized the storage space occupied by each format:

12 million pixels of JPEG-XL lossy ProRAW format is estimated to be 11MB.

12 million pixels of JPEG-XL lossless ProRAW format is estimated to be 18MB.

48 million pixels of JPEG-XL lossy ProRAW format is estimated to be 20MB.

48 million pixels of JPEG-XL lossless ProRAW format is estimated to be 46MB.

As a comparison, a 48 million pixels ProRAW photo taken on iPhone 15Pro approximately occupies 75MB of space.

Although only iPhone 16Pro models can take photos in JPEG-XL format, any Apple device running iOS 17 or later or macOS 14 or later can view images in this format.
