TapTechNews May 17th news, when Chevrolet announced the discontinuation of the sixth-generation Camaro (Camaro) at the end of 2024, the official firmly asserted that the car would eventually return. Mark Reuss, president of General Motors, said in an interview with MotorTrend that he hopes the Chevrolet Camaro can return to its original intention and become an affordable and widely attractive model. He also hinted that the Camaro may return in the form of an electric vehicle, and its starting price will be close to that of the Chevrolet Equinox EV.

The starting price of the Equinox EV is $34,995 (TapTechNews note: currently about 253,000 yuan). This will make the price of the electric Camaro significantly higher than that of its gasoline version of the previous model (starting price is $30,900). However, the new car is expected to get a $7,500 tax credit in the US, which may reduce the final price to about $27,495.

In order to control costs, the electric Camaro may pay more attention to the appearance design rather than the performance. This may disappoint some performance enthusiasts, but it should be noted that the fuel Camaro equipped with a V8 engine has a starting price of $40,395, and the high-performance ZL1 version is as high as $73,695.

At present, there is still little news about the next-generation Camaro. It is reported that General Motors is still discussing whether to launch a sedan or a crossover version. Even if the Camaro will return in the form of a sedan, it may not be a two-door coupe, as the sales in this segment have dropped significantly. The Camaro may become a four-door coupe, and considering that the Malibu has been discontinued, such a design direction seems reasonable.

However, the crossover is the mainstream in today's market. The success of the Ford Mustang Mach-E is a good example. Therefore, it is also quite attractive for the manufacturers who focus on financial returns to launch a Camaro crossover, but this will also face the problem of overlapping positioning with the Chevrolet Blazer EV and Equinox EV.

In short, due to many unresolved issues, the electrification return of the Camaro seems to need some time.
