China Unicom and Huawei Complete 5G-A Outdoor Networking Verification in Shanghai

TapTechNews May 17th news, China Unicom Research Institute released a statement announcing that China Unicom and Huawei have successfully completed the first 5G-A outdoor large-scale networking verification in Pudong Jinqiao. The test results show that after the three-carrier aggregation + 1024QAM function is enabled, the downlink test rate can reach 4.6 Gbps.

It is introduced that since the commercialization of 5G, China Unicom has cumulatively built and opened 1.27 million 5G mid-band base stations. This time, the commercial verification of FDD high-power terminals was carried out in Shanghai. Compared with ordinary terminals, the transmit power of high-power terminals is increased by 3 dB, which means that the uplink coverage of 5G-A will extend by 3 dB.

TapTechNews note: 5G-A is fully known as 5G-Advanced, also known as 5.5G, which is the technological evolution of 5G. Compared to 5G, it can achieve significant improvements in capacity, rate, delay, positioning, reliability, etc.

The test results show that the uplink rate in power-limited scenarios such as the far-middle point is increased by more than 27%. China Unicom said that this is a great boon for Shanghai's online celebrities' live broadcasts. Even in crowded areas and high-concurrency scenarios, smooth and unclogged live broadcasts can be carried out anytime and anywhere.

The official said that the China Unicom Research Institute has been committed to the 5G large-bandwidth capability and the evolution of the wireless network architecture. For the first time, it formulated the technical requirements of 3.5G outdoor 200M and indoor 300M 5G large-bandwidth co-construction and sharing base station equipment, thereby constructing the China Unicom 5G basic architecture network. In 2019, the Research Institute first introduced 2.1GHz 40M large-bandwidth in 3GPP and promoted large-scale commercial use in 2021, forming the current mid-band large-bandwidth 5G network architecture.

This time, on top of this architecture, three-carrier aggregation and 1024QAM are introduced for the first time, further pushing the single-user rate experience to the extreme. This means that Unicom users will be able to enjoy 4K/8K videos, ultra-high-definition live broadcasts, XR metaverse, naked-eye 3D, generative AI and other businesses anytime and anywhere, and will also bring a large-capacity ultimate experience of supporting dozens of 4K live broadcasts simultaneously for each new media partner, laying a solid network foundation for the explosive growth of future new Internet business forms.
