Professor Zang Jianfeng of Huazhong University of Science and Technology said that the injectable ultra-gel ultrasound sensor adopts advanced acoustic metamaterial technology, with a size of only 0.08 inches × 0.08 inches × 0.08 inches, which is as small as a sesame seed. Its volume is so tiny that it can be safely injected into the human body, and through an external ultrasound probe, changes in physiological parameters such as intracranial pressure, temperature, and pH can be wirelessly monitored.

This brand-new sensor uses a biodegradable polymer material, and will degrade by itself in the body after about 1 month, without the need for another incision to remove it, which not only reduces the patient's pain but also greatly reduces the risk of infection.

Researchers have artificially constructed an air channel structure with a periodic arrangement inside the biodegradable hydrogel matrix. When external environments such as pressure, temperature, and pH value change, there will be a slight deformation inside the gel, which will cause a measurable shift in the reflected sound wave frequency. By accurately detecting this frequency change, various physiological parameters such as intracranial pressure, temperature, pH value, and blood flow velocity can be obtained.
