Huazhong University of Science and Technology and Others Release New Record in Unrepeatered Optical Communication Transmission

TapTechNews August 5th news, recently, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, West Lake University, State Grid Information and Telecommunication Company, Accelink Technologies, and Corning Optical Communications jointly released the latest achievement of single-span 1002.75 kilometers unrepeatered optical communication transmission, breaking the world record in the transmission distance in this field, and also the first realization of the thousand-kilometer-class single-span transmission globally.

According to Accelink Technologies, this is another new leap, new breakthrough, and new record in the single-span transmission technology after the company achieved the longest single-span results of 2.5G and 10G single-span of 713km and 665km respectively in the industry.

In the communication network, a relay station is a workstation to realize signal transmission. In the traditional way, a relay station needs to be built every about 100 kilometers (about 62.14 miles). In ultra-long-distance communication transmission, a large number of relay stations will lead to an increase in cost. In this case, the unrepeatered optical communication system becomes a better choice. It can simplify the transmission line and directly realize the information transmission between the sender and the receiver, reducing the overall system cost, and is widely used in dedicated communication systems such as power grids, railways, highways, and oil and gas pipelines to cross vast uninhabited areas such as deserts, oceans, forests, and swamps.

Through the use of the best electronic and optical systems in this experiment, and by adopting new spread-spectrum modulation coding, ultra-low-loss large effective area fiber, coherent receiver, high-performance Raman pumping, and remote pumping amplification techniques, an ultra-long-span unrepeatered optical fiber transmission system was built, achieving world-class records of transmission distances reaching 1002.75 kilometers and 808.27 kilometers at transmission rates of 2Mb/s and 2.5Gb/s respectively.

At the 29th International Conference on Optoelectronics and Communications (2024OECC), this achievement was published as a PDP paper (TapTechNews note: post-deadlinepaper) with the highest academic quality. The PDP paper aims to release the latest technological progress and record-breaking achievements in the field of optical communication, representing the current highest technical level in the industry. There are only 6 achievements selected for the PDP paper of this conference globally.
