El Niño Ended in May, La Niña May Come Later This Year

TapTechNews On June 15, the official public account of the 'China Meteorological Administration' released a blog post yesterday, indicating that the El Niño event ended in May, and a La Niña state may enter in the late summer and early autumn of this year.

According to the latest monitoring of the National Climate Center, in May 2024, the sea surface temperature in the equatorial central and eastern Pacific Ocean decreased significantly compared with the previous period, and the Niño3.4 index was 0.28 °C, and the sliding average of the index from March to May was 0.78 °C.

According to the national standard 'Method for Distinguishing El Niño/La Niña Events' (GB/T 33666-2017), the eastern El Niño event that started in May 2023 continued until April 2024 and was determined to have ended in May; the intensity of this El Niño event is medium, and the duration is 12 months.

TapTechNews queried the relevant public information. The World Meteorological Organization also released a report on June 3, stating that the El Niño phenomenon that caused the global temperature spike and extreme weather in the first few months of 2023 to 2024 has signs of ending, but a La Niña phenomenon may recur later this year.

La Niña phenomenon, also known as the anti-El Niño phenomenon, is a phenomenon opposite to the El Niño phenomenon, that is, the 'eastern Pacific cooling stage'. Meteorologists use it to refer to the phenomenon of a wide range of continuous abnormal cooling of the sea surface temperature in the eastern and central equatorial Pacific Ocean, also known as anti-El Niño.

On June 3, 2024, the World Meteorological Organization said that there is a 60% chance that the La Niña phenomenon will appear from July to September, and a 70% chance that it will appear from August to November.

Monitoring results of the National Climate Center of the China Meteorological Administration show that it is expected to enter a La Niña state in the later stage of summer. In the summer of the La Niña development year, the tropical monsoon trough is偏 west and偏 north, and the number of typhoon generations is small, and precipitation in northern China is prone to be more in midsummer.
