Pony.ai Gets High-Speed Road Test License in Guangzhou

TapTechNews May 21 news, TapTechNews learned from the official public account of Pony.ai that on May 21, Pony.ai announced that it had obtained the first intelligent connected vehicle high-speed and expressway test license in Guangzhou, and one model each of its self-driving taxis and self-driving trucks was selected. This also means that self-driving vehicles in Guangzhou can finally drive on high-speed and expressways.

It is understood that this is the first batch of intelligent connected vehicle high-speed and expressway test sections opened in Guangzhou, including Nansha Port Expressway and Congpu Expressway (Phase I), with a total open road length of about 105 kilometers (about 65 miles), which is a high-speed first-class test section. By the end of 2023, Guangzhou had opened 797 test roads (including the full opening of Nansha, with a cumulative one-way mileage of 1623.5 kilometers (about 1008 miles) and a two-way mileage of 3247 kilometers (about 2017 miles)), and the open test sections involved six administrative districts such as Baiyun District, Huadu District, Panyu District, Huangpu District, Nansha District, and Haizhu District.

The two models that Pony.ai obtained the license for this time are the Toyota Sienna model equipped with Pony.ai's sixth-generation self-driving passenger car system, and the Sany model equipped with Pony.ai's third-generation self-driving truck system.

According to Pony.ai, previously, Pony.ai had obtained high-speed and expressway test licenses on some roads in Beijing and Tianjin. As early as July 2021, Pony.ai was allowed to carry out passenger car and truck expressway tests in the Intelligent Connected Vehicle Policy Pilot Zone in Beijing, and then gradually carried out tests on 6 Beijing expressways and urban expressways that were opened in stages; in September 2023, Pony.ai took the lead in carrying out the self-driving road test from Daxing Airport to Beijing Yizhuang, and now it has upgraded from the road test stage to the demonstration application stage and started passenger transfer; in January 2024, Pony.ai was allowed to carry out self-driving truck tests on the Beijing-Tianjin-Tanggu Expressway, becoming the first enterprise in the country to obtain a cross-provincial high-speed self-driving truck test license.
